MAIL ART is a community supported, postcard art fundraising project, organized by Bainbridge Arts & Crafts.
New York artist Ray Johnson, in the mid 1950s, posted small collages, prints of abstract
drawings and poems to art world notables, giving rise to what became known as the New
York Correspondence School. Artist Edward M. Plunkett has argued that communication-
as-art-form is an ancient tradition; he posits (tongue in cheek) that mail art began
when Cleopatra had herself delivered to Julius Caesar in a rolled-up carpet. (from Wikipedia)
Mail art became popular in the 1960s. Any postal marks added to the piece while enroute
contribute to the story and the look of the artwork. Origins can be found in works by Marcel
Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters and the Italian Futurists.
In our case, MAIL ART is a community supported, postcard art fundraising project, organized
by Bainbridge Arts & Crafts. We are a 74-year-old nonprofit located on Bainbridge Island,
Washington. MAIL ART is open to all who have interest in participating.
Entries are not juried and will be accepted by mail, or can be delivered in-person, until April 25, 2022.

Washington. MAIL ART is open to all who have interest in participating. Entries are not juried
and will be accepted by mail, or can be delivered in-person, until April 25, 2022.
Postcards are donated to BAC by the maker. They will be on view and for sale in the gallery
from May 6 to May 29, 2022. Mail Art participants are invited to the opening reception on
Friday, May 6 from 6-8pm. All proceeds from the sale of each postcard will support BAC’s
mission, programs, exhibitions, and events.
To qualify with USPS for mailing as a postcard, it must be:
Rectangular
At least 3-1/2 inches high x 5 inches long x 0.007 inch thick
No more than 4-1/4 inches high x 6 inches long x 0.016 inches thick
As long as it meets the above size requirements, you are free to create your work of art on
the front of the postcard in any medium(s) that you choose. You may enter as many postcards
as you’d like. You retain the copyright to your artwork. Don’t forget to include your name on
the back of the postcard and also include your email address. We won’t give this information
out to the buyer unless we have your permission to do so. Works will move to our online
store after May 29 where they will continue to be exhibited and sold.
