Reggie Goings in Concert

Reggie Goings in Concert

Presented by Bainbridge Island Museum of Art at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art

Join us for an evening of music with Reggie Goings. A soulful baritone vocalist reminiscent of greats from the past like Lou Rawls, Nat King Cole and Billy Eckstein, this quintessential jazz singer performs standards, blues, bebop and original songs.

FILMING NOTICE
BIMA is excited to be working in partnership with KCTS 9 to film and broadcast all 2021 Within/Earshot Jazz Festival concerts! This level of exposure for our small but mighty Museum is a game-changer. Due to production necessities, capacity will be limited beyond BIMA’s COVID guidelines. BIMA and the KCTS 9 crew have worked to ensure that no sightlines will be permanently obscured, but views might be temporarily obscured due to a single moving camera and operator at the front of the stage. We appreciate your understanding that you’re part of a live studio audience this year and that by purchasing a ticket, you agree to appear on camera during the recording.

HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY
BIMA requires proof of full COVID-19 vaccination for all attendees of programs held in the Frank Buxton Auditorium or BIMA Classroom. Masks are required for all attendees regardless of vaccination status. Learn more about this policy here.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Featured Vocalist REGGIE GOINGS, a beloved fixture of the Seattle jazz scene for over 30 years, performs standards, jazz blues, bebop, and originals with home-town favorites Eric Verlinde (piano), Phil Sparks (bass), and D’vonne Lewis (drums).

Vocalist REGGIE GOINGS was once a frequent performer on the Seattle jazz scene, performing at venues like the New Orleans Creole Restaurant or hosting the Seattle Jazz Offering at Tula’s for 15 years. His musical and social circles included iconic local artists such as Hadley Caliman and Phil Sparks. In recent years, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) director Michael Brockman invited Goings to perform with the band in a tribute to another soul legend, the great Ray Charles.

The performance reminded Seattle jazz fans of Reggie’s blues infused baritone that acted as a perfect fit for the role. Like Charles, his influences are wide ranging, from the pioneering bebop sound of Billy Eckstine, as well as vocalese singer Eddie Jefferson, to the suave sophistication of Lou Rawls and Joe Williams. His sound is rooted in the blues, infused with the revolution of bop, and refined by the power of soul. The language Goings draws from is steeped in history, and expressed by an artist dedicated to, and humbled by, this quintessential art form we call jazz.

Goings will perform with a trio whose names have been etched prominently in the story of jazz music in Seattle.

Pianist ERIC VERLINDE is an alumni of Berklee College of music. He has worked with some of the finest vocalists today including Marc Murphy, Thelma Houston, Dee Daniels and many other talented singers. Eric worked with Reggie at Tula’s along with Hadley Caliman for over a decade during the monthly Seattle Jazz Offering’s Jazz showcase.

PHIL SPARKS has been a first call bassist in Seattle since his arrival over thirty years ago. Sparks has performed regularly with Thomas Marriott, Matt Jorgensen and his latest ensemble, Nu Trio with Nathan Breedlove and Brian Kirk. Phil first performed with Reggie in 1990s in Pioneer Square (Hollywood Underground). They also performed together for 15 years at Tula’s Restaurant (1999 -2014). Phil, as well as Eric are both featured on Reggie’s “In the Garden” album” (released in 2014).

Like Verlinde and Sparks, DRUMMER D’VONNE LEWIS goes way back with Goings, performing with him at Tula’s while still in High School. Over the recent years, D’VONNE LEWIS is considered to be the best and most versatile jazz drummer in Seattle. As first-call drummer to many musicians, he gigs with styles ranging from jazz, funk, hip-hop, and rock to Brazilian and African. But it is his impeccable swing and feel that connect him most logically with jazz.
