If we think of drawing another person as a metaphor for truly seeing and honoring them, what does it mean that the children in our lives, White children and children of color alike, often exclusively draw White characters?

As parents of multiracial Black girls we asked this question ourselves when we noticed that the racial diversity in their lives - friends, dolls, books, other children's media - wasn't reflected in the people they drew, who were largely White. It made us think about how we learned to draw as kids, about whom we drew and didn't draw, and it inspired us to give our kids additional tools for seeing. And the idea for our upcoming webinar event, Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids, was born.

Our guests for Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids will be children's book authors/illustrators Grace Lin, Oge Mora and Yuyi Morales, who will share their own stories about learning to draw themselves and spotlight others from their communities in their art. You'll see the portraits the artists drew of each other "across a color line" and hear their insights about using drawing as a tool for truly seeing our communities in all their rich color.

Drawing Across the Color Line with Kids

Unlike our typical webinar, this one will start with a video premier. The video will feature three award-winning, children's author/illustrators - Grace Lin (A Big Mooncake for Little Star), Oge Mora (Saturday) and Yuyi Morales (Dreamers). These beloved children's book artists, all #OwnVoices creators, talk to each other about their own evolutions, from early childhood to today, in representing people who look like them. They draw each other, each across a color line, and have suggestions for how adults can support kids to use drawing as a tool for seeing and honoring others. After the video, the artists will join us to answer your questions. This webinar will last 75 minutes, rather than our usual 60.
