Painting the Ephemeral with Gage Opdenbrouw

The focus of the workshop will be on close attention and scrupulous sensitivity, and an attempt to put it all down simply, and be willing to make changes, both as the light on your motif changes, and as you change your ideas about what’s important in the course of the painting.  The guiding principle is that we are working from the direct experience, and memory of it.  So even though we will meet online, we will be working with paying close attention to our actual surroundings, and drawing and painting them directly from life and from drawings and memory when necessary.  Photos can of course be used as an aid to memory but the emphasis will be on drawing, memory, particular experience, and developing your own painterly way of putting that down.  It’s important to find a way with your paint that allows you to try things, make adjustments, even radical changes,  and stay open and receptive to what is developing on the canvas….  We’ll talk about the role of drawing and working from drawings as a way of working with and deepening sense memory.
