
See a Kabuki dance from the 18th century, learn what Nihon Buyo is, and experience using the sensu (Japanese “fan” for dancing) and wearing a kimono.
Nihon Buyo artist Kaya Yamazaki will perform two solo pieces, an excerpt from a Kabuki dance that premiered in 1820 and another from a celebratory piece danced to the oldest nagauta song, possibly composed around 1720.
Following the performance, Kaya will give a short talk about classical Japanese dance and what she has learned through her decades of experience as a performer, teacher, and anthropologist.
