Autumn Open Trails Day at IslandWood!

See all the wonderful seasonal changes that happen on our campus when we open our trails to the public for an Afternoon on the Trails!

Bring your family and friends to explore hemlock and red-cedar woods, meadows, streams, and Mac's Pond. Take the Spine Trail north, weave around the cattail marsh, and stop at the Bird Blind to observe waterfowl and other wildlife. Both treehouses and the forest Canopy Tower will be open for your visit. We'll have maps for you and will be happy to suggest a route suitable for your group size, abilities and interests.

On March 30th, 1942, hundreds of Japanese American

On March 30th, 1942, hundreds of Japanese American residents were forcibly removed from their homes on Bainbridge Island as a direct result of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 and Civilian Exclusion Order No.1.

At 11am, Wednesday, March 30th, members of the public are invited to gather at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial with the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community, survivors, and civic leaders, to commemorate 81 Years of Healing on Bainbridge Island.

Visit the beautiful cedar carved memorial wall dedicated to the 227 Bainbridge Island residents who were forced to leave with only six days’ notice.

In addition to the scheduled program, which includes the annual reading of the residents’ names, the community will also celebrate the launch of a new, free downloadable audio tour at the historic site through the National Parks Service.

For the first time the voices of those who experienced Exclusion will be your on-site guides to the historic site. The audio tour hosted by the National Parks Service (NPS) enables every visitor to have a profoundly new and enriched experience at the memorial.

“It started here,” President of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community Carol Reitz said. “With this tour and technology, we may help visitors better understand this memorial through first-hand survivor accounts when they tour the Memorial.

“These voices will be silent no more, ‘Nidoto Nai Yoni’ – Let It Not Happen Again.”
