Acclaimed journalist and author, Jori Lewis, comes to Eagle Harbor Book Co. on October 3d to share her new book "Slaves for Peanuts"

As a participating artist/author in Bloedel Reserve’s Uplift: Collaborations With Nature week, Jori Lewis comes to Eagle Harbor Book Co. to share her new book Slaves for Peanuts: A Story of Conquest, Liberation, and a Crop That Changed History.  Slaves for Peanuts details the important history of African American agriculture and it’s lasting transatlantic impact.

With sharp investigative skills and compelling storytelling, Jori Lewis uncovers the hidden connections between people, nature, and history. She focuses on how agriculture shapes cultures, especially in the Global South, where she has reported extensively on environmental and social issues. Her reports and essays have appeared in prestigious publications such as The Atlantic, Discover and Emergence magazines, among others, and she is a senior editor of Adi Magazine, a literary magazine of global politics.

Jori researched and wrote Slaves for Peanuts with the support provided by the prestigious Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and a Silvers Grant for Work in Progress. In June, 2023, the James Beard Foundation awarded Slaves for Peanuts the James Beard Foundation Book Award for Reference, History and Scholarship.
