A dedicated educator, Johnaye resides in Seattle, WA where she serves as Professor of Music at the Cornish College of the Arts. In 2014, she recorded, produced and released her debut CD, Here, for the johnygirl label. Featuring 12 of Johnaye’s original compositions. In the spring of 2018, Kendrick returned to the studio to record her sophomore album, which was nominated for Earshot Jazz’s NW Recording of the Year. Johnaye is a recipient of the 2019 Artist Trust Fellowship Grant and the Chamber Music America 2020 Performance Plus Grant. During quarantine, Kendrick received her first GRAMMY® nomination as part of the collective säje for their first composition “Desert Song” in the Best Arrangement Instruments and Vocals category. They also received the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize Award for their second composition “Wisteria” as well as their first Jazz Journalists Association Award Nomination for “Best Vocal Jazz Group”. Their debut album is expected to be released in Spring of 2021.
